The two ways a sauna makes heat
Every home sauna warms you one of two ways, and the difference shapes everything from the power cord to the way a session feels.
Traditional (stove-heated)
An electric heater warms a pile of stones, and the stones warm the air — typically into the 150–195°F range. Ladling water onto the stones creates a burst of steam, which is the heart of the traditional ritual. The air stays dry until you make it otherwise, and sessions tend to be shorter and more intense.
Infrared
Panels emit infrared radiation that warms your body directly rather than superheating the air. Cabins typically run 110–140°F, feel gentler, and reach temperature faster. Many plug into a standard household outlet, which makes them the simplest to install.

Shapes, sizes, and where they live
Cabin saunas
Boxy rooms that sit against a wall indoors — or under cover outdoors. The most common home format, from one-person corners to six-person gathering spots.
Barrel saunas
The round outdoor form you see in backyards. The shape heats efficiently, sheds weather well, and needs no outbuilding — but it is an outdoor-only choice that needs a level base.
Indoor vs outdoor
Indoor keeps the sauna steps from your shower and out of the weather, but demands real ventilation and moisture planning. Outdoor gives you freedom on size and steam, but needs a foundation, weather protection, and a longer power run. Decide this before you fall in love with a model.
Sizing: count people, then add one
Buy for the number of people who will use it at once — then add one, because a sauna that is merely adequate feels small once you are in it. Bench layout matters more than square footage: the upper bench is where the heat lives, so check sitting headroom, not just floor area. Traditional heaters usually require a dedicated 220–240V circuit run by a licensed electrician, sized to the heater's draw. Either way, map your panel capacity and outlet locations before the sauna ships, not after.
Installation & delivery planning
Here is where high-ticket sauna purchases usually get complicated — and where a little planning pays for itself.
- Freight is curbside. Full-size saunas typically ship as crated freight, and the carrier's job usually ends at the curb or driveway — not at your patio. Plan how the crate gets from the truck to its final spot, and have help (or equipment) lined up for delivery day.
- Electrical comes in two flavors. Many infrared cabins run on a standard 120V household outlet — confirm amperage on the final listing. Traditional heaters almost always need a dedicated 220–240V circuit run by a licensed electrician, sized to the heater's draw. Get the electrician's quote before you order, and ask how long the run is: longer runs cost more.
- Measure the path, not just the room. Doorways, hallway turns, stairwells, gates, and low branches between the curb and the final spot all count — and the packed dimensions are the ones that matter.
- Outdoor needs a level base. A concrete pad is the gold standard; compacted gravel or a reinforced deck also work. An unlevel sauna never quite sits right, and doors and benches feel it first.
- Schedule the delivery appointment. Freight carriers typically call to book a window — make sure someone is home, the path is clear, and the base is ready before the truck arrives.
What to look for
- Wood. Cedar and hemlock are the long-standing choices for cabins; thermo-treated woods handle outdoor exposure. Look for tight grain and minimal knots on benches.
- Heater. Sized to the cabin's volume — an undersized heater never quite gets there. Look for established heater makers and ETL/UL-listed electrical components.
- Controls. Simple, readable, operable from inside and outside the room.
- Ventilation. Intake low near the heater, exhaust high on the opposite side. If a design has no vent plan, keep shopping.
- Door. Tempered glass, opens outward, with a handle that works with hot hands.
- Warranty and support. Know who answers in year two when a heater element or control acts up — the manufacturer, the retailer, or nobody.
